Trees have started to change from greens to vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows and there is now a nip in the air. Yes, autumn is back in all its glory here in Tucker County.
The turn of seasons means pumpkin carving, hot apple cider, shorter days, and brisk weather. It’s time to embrace all things cozy.
With that said, there are various safety and health measures that should be considered to ensure you and yours get the most out of the season. Remember some of our best staff tips this autumn.
🍁 Have your heating system checked
Before temperatures dip down too low, be sure to have your furnace, woodstove, or other heating system serviced. A professional should inspect the system to make sure everything is in working condition, no damage was caused over the summer, and that there are no leaks or issues. You would hate to wake up on a cold morning to find your heat not working and potentially put your family and home at risk.
🍁 Change batteries in smoke detectors
Daylight savings time is always the first Sunday in November, and it’s an easy reminder to change your batteries in smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. Also, consider checking and replacing any home fire extinguishers that have expired. Up-to-date detectors and extinguishers are important especially during a time when heating systems are being used again and candles are often lit.
🍁 Be careful driving / Be prepared of road conditions
As Daylight Savings Time approaches, we will be losing sunlight more and more each day. By the time November rolls around, the sun will be setting when the work day is over. Be aware of this change and make plans if you have difficulty driving at dark.
Also, autumn weather in West Virginia can be unpredictable—sometimes rainy, other times snowy—know the weather conditions before you hit the road and have your car prepared with the correct tires to prevent accidents.
🍁 Stay well
COVID-19 cases are still rising in the state and flu season is on its way. With both of these illnesses making an impact on our communities, it’s important to stay healthy and take extra precautions to prevent you and loved ones from getting sick.
Consider these tips:
- Wash and sanitize your hands often.
- Wear a face mask or face covering when out and about or in large crowds.
- Always cover your sneezes and coughs.
- Avoid touching your face, nose and mouth, as much as possible or if you must wash your hands thoroughly before.
- Stay home if you’re sick.
- Get COVID-19 or flu tested if you’re feeling unwell.
- Get the flu shot—Though the flu shot does not necessarily prevent you from getting the flu, it does significantly decrease the chance of your symptoms being as severe.
- Get the COVID-19 vaccine—The COVID-19 vaccine is being offered for free at St. George Medical Clinic daily.
Note: The COVID-19 vaccination is available by appointment at either St. George Clinic location (Main Clinic or School-Based Clinic). The vaccination is free to patients after billing insurance. The COVID-19 vaccination does not guarantee complete immunity or stop you from contracting the COVID-19 virus, but it does significantly decrease symptoms and your chances of hospitalization or death if you do become ill.
